The classes - Autumn 2024

Join us this autumn for a captivating exploration of art's rich history, designed for both seasoned enthusiasts and those new to the field. The Avoncroft Arts Society’s History of Art course offers a deep dive into fascinating themes across centuries of artistic expression. Whether you're a longtime member or a newcomer eager to expand your knowledge, this course will enrich your understanding and appreciation of art.

Each session will be held on the first Thursday of the month, from September to December, with each class focusing on a distinct and engaging theme:

Thursday, September 5th
The Representation of Movement in Art

Discover how artists across different periods and styles have captured the essence of motion, from the flowing forms of classical sculptures to the dynamic brushstrokes of modern painters.

Thursday, October 3rd
The Theme of Dance in Art

Delve into the rhythm and grace of dance as depicted in art, exploring how artists have conveyed the beauty and energy of dance in their work, from ancient times to contemporary pieces.

Thursday, November 7th
The Theme of the Tree in Art

Trees have been powerful symbols throughout art history. This session will explore how artists have portrayed trees as metaphors for life, growth, and nature’s beauty, revealing the deep connections between art and the natural world.

Thursday, December 5th
The Adoration of the Magi in Art

Perfect for the festive season, this session examines the depiction of the Three Wise Men, or the Adoration of the Magi, in art. We will explore the rich iconography and historical significance of this biblical scene as interpreted by various artists over the centuries.
