Jane McMillan

Tutor - Pottery

I started developing my interest and skills in ceramics, glass and textiles from a very young age.
I have taught crafts and pottery both in therapeutic settings, at Uffculme Clinic as part of the programme of Occupational Therapy, and also at Kidderminster College and Community Centres.

A year’s access to work in the studios at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (University of Central England) under the Artist’s Access to Art Colleges programme gave me the opportunity to further my explorations in glassworking. During this time I worked in the studios alongside students whilst delivering some tuition.

The university (now BCU) then engaged me for several years as a Tutor in glass and ceramic studio work for degree students, whilst also as a Lecturer in the Department of Theoretical and Historical Studies where I lectured on the History of Art, Design and Architecture, delivering to students on degree courses.
Avoncroft Art Society has been part of my life for many years, mainly as tutor for pottery and various crafts, including several textile groups, plus delivering many series of lectures on the History of Art, Design and Architecture. I also served for several years on the Society’s Committee when I successfully applied for grants to help start groups, purchase equipment and fund room improvements.

I have always found teaching the range of art, craft, design, and history very satisfying, currently I particularly enjoy teaching my Monday pottery group; I like meeting new members, demonstrating techniques and helping them learn how to work with clay. I do not set projects, rather I will help them work on their own individual pieces whether beginners or those with experience of clay working.

Whilst tutoring I have always continued with my own creative work in ceramics, glass and textiles. It is intrinsic to me that I have to explore, experiment, research, and create. My designs are inspired by nature, informed by historical studies, all my clay work is hand modelled as I prefer the direct connection between clay and hand. This for me is the essential nature of craft working.
